Royal Worcester Painted Fruit
The art of Royal Worcester Painted Fruit has evolved over two centuries after first appearing at Worcester in 1770. During the late 18th Century, artists and painters began to turn away from the traditional Chinese designs which had dominated until then, and European influences began to make their mark. It is thought that Worcester artists originally painted local fruits grown in the orchards of the county of Worcestershire, an area of England famous for growing fruit. These paintings created the style that all Worcester fruit painting was to follow, with full sized fruit, meticulously painted by hand to depict all the imperfections of the fruit and leaves so realistically that you could almost reach out and pick the apples and plums as if they were lying on the ground in the orchards. This style remains unchanged today. Painters can train for up to seven years before being allowed to take their place in the great line of Worcester artists of the past. Each unique piece is meticulously painted by hand in time honoured traditions to convey its natural beauty. The artist starts work by painting directly onto the item itself. No stencil or outline is used and the artist creates the composition of the fruit painting as they work. By using a palette of translucent colours, the artist creates the painting by adding layers of colours to portray the shape of each fruit. Translucent colours are used to allow the lighter colours to show through, resulting in remarkable depth within the piece. These masterpieces could not be complete without the skills of the gilder and burnisher. The gilding process involves the use of several different tones of 22 carat gold. Using a combination of bright and matt gold builds depth within the gilding by creating light and shade across the piece. Finally, the finished item is carefully inspected again to ensure it reaches the customer in perfect condition. Today, Royal Worcester continues to produce an exclusive range of items. Each one is uniquely crafted by highly skilled artists in the time honoured tradition of Worcester fruit painting and is beautifully presented in a silk lined gift box complete with its own certificate of authenticity.
