When you think of the word ‘Mum’, what’s the first thing that springs to mind? The person who first taught you to tie your shoelaces, bakes your favourite cake every birthday, or the person you know you can turn to at any given moment? There’s no one quite like Mum.

This Sunday 22nd March is Mother’s Day, and so the perfect opportunity to show your mother just how much she means to you.

In our latest blog post, we will uncover the history of Mother’s Day, and of course, recommend the perfect Mother’s Day gift to ensure a big smile lasts on your mum’s face all day long.

The History of Mother's Day

In the US, Mother’s Day is believed to have been created in 1908 by a lady named Anna Jarvis. The celebration began when Anna held a memorial at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in West Virginia for her mother. Believing all mothers should be honoured as they are “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”, Anna continued campaigning to make Mother’s Day a recognised celebration.

In the UK, Mother’s Day is seen to have originated from the early Christian festival, “Mothering Sunday”, which was celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, in which children would gift their mothers with flowers and treats. Eventually, the tradition faded and merged with the US tradition in the 1930s and 40s.
